Understanding Choghadiya: Auspicious & Inauspicious Timings

What is Choghadiya?

Choghadiya (or Chogadia) is a traditional method used to determine the most favorable time to begin any new venture. Originally used for travel muhurthas (auspicious times), its simplicity has led to its use for all types of muhurthas.

There are four favorable Choghadiyas—Amrit, Shubh, Labh, and Char—which are ideal for auspicious activities. Conversely, Rog, Kaal, and Udveg are considered inauspicious and should be avoided.

The daytime Choghadiya spans from sunrise to sunset, while the nighttime Choghadiya extends from sunset to the next day's sunrise.

Vaar Vela, Kaal Vela, and Kaal Ratri

It is believed that no auspicious activity should be performed during Vaar Vela, Kaal Vela, and Kaal Ratri:

  • Vaar Vela & Kaal Vela occur during the day.
  • Kaal Ratri occurs at night.

Any Manglik (auspicious) work performed during these periods is thought to be ineffective.

Why is it Called Choghadiya?

In the Hindu system of time division:

  • The period from sunrise to sunset is divided into 30 Ghatis.
  • For Choghadiya Muhurta, this duration is further split into 8 equal parts, resulting in 8 Choghadiyas during the day and 8 at night.
  • Since each Choghadiya lasts approximately 4 Ghatis, the term Choghadiya comes from "Cho" (four) + "Ghadiya" (Ghati).

Overlaps with Rahu Kala

If an auspicious Choghadiya coincides with Rahu Kala, it should generally be avoided, as Rahu Kala is highly malefic. This is especially emphasized in South India when selecting a Muhurta.

Overlaps with Vaar Vela, Kaal Vela & Kaal Ratri

A favorable Choghadiya may also coincide with Vaar Vela, Kaal Vela, or Kaal Ratri. When choosing a Choghadiya Muhurta, these adverse time periods should be disregarded, as any Manglik work performed during them is believed to be unproductive.

How is a Choghadiya Marked as Good or Bad?

Each weekday's first Choghadiya is ruled by the planetary lord of that day (e.g., Sunday’s first Choghadiya is ruled by the Sun). The last Choghadiya is also ruled by the same planet.

According to Vedic astrology:

  • Venus, Mercury, Moon, and Jupiter → Auspicious.
  • Sun, Mars, and Saturn → Inauspicious.

Types of Choghadiya & Their Uses

Udveg (Inauspicious) → Ruled by the Sun

Generally inauspicious. Suitable for government-related work.

Char (Neutral) → Ruled by Venus

Best for travel-related activities.

Labh (Auspicious) → Ruled by Mercury

Best for education, learning new skills, and business.

Amrit (Highly Auspicious) → Ruled by the Moon

Good for all types of auspicious activities.

Kaal (Inauspicious) → Ruled by Saturn

Not recommended for positive tasks, but suitable for wealth accumulation.

Shubh (Auspicious) → Ruled by Jupiter

Best for ceremonies, especially marriages.

Understanding Choghadiya helps in selecting the most favorable time for activities. Avoiding adverse periods maximizes success.
