Guide
How Guna Milan works
Kundli matching (Kundli Milan) compares the Moon in two birth charts across eight factors called kootas. Each koota carries a weight, and together they add up to 36 points, or gunas.
| Koota | Points | What it checks |
|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | Spiritual and work compatibility |
| Vashya | 2 | Mutual attraction and influence |
| Tara | 3 | Health and wellbeing through birth stars |
| Yoni | 4 | Physical and intimate harmony |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | Friendship between Moon-sign lords |
| Gana | 6 | Temperament: Deva, Manushya or Rakshasa |
| Bhakoot | 7 | Love, family welfare and prosperity |
| Nadi | 8 | Health and progeny |
A high score is a good sign, but it isn't the whole story. Experienced astrologers also compare the 7th house, Venus, the Navamsa chart and Manglik dosha before giving advice.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
How many gunas should match for marriage?
Traditionally at least 18 of 36 gunas. 18 to 24 is considered a good match, 25 to 32 very good, and above 32 excellent. Astrologers also look at Nadi and Bhakoot dosha and Manglik status, not only the total.
What is Nadi dosha?
Nadi dosha occurs when both partners' Moon nakshatras belong to the same Nadi (Aadi, Madhya or Antya). It scores 0 of 8 points and is traditionally linked to health and progeny concerns, though several exceptions cancel it.
What is Bhakoot dosha?
Bhakoot looks at how far apart the two Moon signs are. A 2/12, 5/9 or 6/8 relationship scores 0 of 7 points and is called Bhakoot dosha.
Does Kundli matching need birth time?
Yes. Guna Milan is based on the Moon's nakshatra, and the Moon moves about 13° a day, so the time and place of birth change the result.
Which person should be entered as the boy?
Varna and a few other kootas are read from the groom to the bride, so enter the groom's details on the left and the bride's on the right.
