Quick answer

Step-by-step guide to calculating Shubh Muhurat using Choghadiya: day and night periods, Amrit, Shubh and Labh timings, Abhijit Muhurat, and which times to avoid.

How to Calculate Shubh Muhurat With Choghadiya

When there's no time for a full astrological consultation, Choghadiya is the quickest traditional way to find a Shubh (auspicious) Muhurat. It's widely used in Gujarat, Rajasthan and Maharashtra for travel, business openings and purchases.

The seven Choghadiyas

Choghadiya Ruler Nature Good for
Amrit Moon Best Everything auspicious
Shubh Jupiter Good Weddings, puja, ceremonies
Labh Mercury Good Business, education, buying
Char Venus Neutral Travel, movement
Udveg Sun Bad Only government matters
Rog Mars Bad Avoid; disputes, illness
Kaal Saturn Bad Avoid; losses

Step-by-step calculation

  1. Find local sunrise and sunset for your city. Choghadiya is always local.
  2. Divide daytime by 8. If sunrise is 6:24 AM and sunset 5:48 PM, the day is 11 h 24 min, so each Choghadiya lasts 85.5 minutes.
  3. Start from sunrise and assign names in the order for the weekday. Each day begins with the Choghadiya of the day's ruling planet:
Day First day Choghadiya
Sunday Udveg
Monday Amrit
Tuesday Rog
Wednesday Labh
Thursday Shubh
Friday Char
Saturday Kaal
  1. Repeat for the night, dividing sunset to next sunrise by 8, with the night sequence for that weekday.

Doing this by hand every day is tedious, so our Choghadiya calculator does it for your city and marks the period running right now.

Abhijit Muhurat

Divide daytime into 15 muhurtas. The 8th is Abhijit, centred on local solar noon and lasting about 48 minutes. It is believed to overcome most doshas, which makes it a reliable choice when no Amrit or Shubh period fits, except on Wednesdays.
