Quick answer
What are biorhythm critical days? Learn why zero-crossings matter, how often they happen, what double and triple critical days are, and how to plan around them.
Biorhythm Critical Days
On a biorhythm chart, a critical day is when one of your cycles crosses the zero line, switching from its active phase to its recharge phase or back again. Biorhythm theory treats these transitions as the least stable points in a cycle.
How often do they happen?
Each cycle crosses zero twice per cycle:
| Cycle | Length | Critical day every |
|---|---|---|
| Physical | 23 days | ~11.5 days |
| Emotional | 28 days | 14 days |
| Intellectual | 33 days | ~16.5 days |
Because the emotional cycle is exactly 28 days, its critical days fall on the same weekday as the day you were born, every two weeks, for your whole life.

Single, double and triple critical days
- Single: one cycle crosses zero. Common, and usually mild.
- Double: two cycles cross on the same day, which happens a few times a year.
- Triple: physical, emotional and intellectual all cross together. It happens on the day you're born and then exactly again only about every 29 years, though near-misses come round more often.
What critical days are said to mean
- Physical critical day: coordination and stamina are said to be off. Take care with sport, heavy lifting and driving.
- Emotional critical day: you may be touchier or moodier than usual, so it's a poor day for difficult conversations.
- Intellectual critical day: concentration may slip. Double-check figures and contracts.
Biorhythm theory was popular in the 1970s, and some airlines and factories experimented with it. Later research found no reliable link to accidents. Use critical days as a reminder to slow down, not as a warning.
Find your critical days
The biorhythm calculator lists every critical day in the next month, labels which cycle is crossing, and marks today's gauges "critical" when it applies. New to the chart? Start with how to read a biorhythm chart.
