Sun, Moon and Rising Signs: Your Big Three
Horoscopes are written for your Sun sign, but astrologers rarely stop there. Your Moon sign and Rising sign complete what's called your "big three": three different lenses on the same person.
The Sun sign: who you are becoming
The Sun sign is where the Sun was on the day you were born. It represents your core identity, vitality and the qualities you grow into over your life. It's the only one of the three you can find from your date of birth alone.
The Moon sign: what you need
The Moon moves through a sign every two to three days. Your Moon sign describes your emotional nature: how you react, what comforts you, and what you need from people close to you.
- A Cancer Moon needs emotional security and home.
- A Sagittarius Moon needs freedom and new experiences.
- A Capricorn Moon feels safest when life is under control.

The Rising sign: how you meet the world
Your Rising sign, or ascendant, is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. It changes about every two hours, so it is the most personal of the three. It shapes:

- your instinctive approach to new situations
- the layout of every house in your chart
In a Vedic chart the ascendant is the Lagna, house 1, the starting point for reading everything else.
