Quick answer

Vedic (Jyotish) vs Western astrology compared: sidereal vs tropical zodiac, why your sign may change, Moon vs Sun focus, houses, nakshatras, dashas and which one to use.

Vedic vs Western Astrology

Both traditions read the same planets in the same sky, yet a Western Leo can turn out to be a Vedic Cancer. Here's why, and the other ways Jyotish (Vedic astrology) and Western astrology differ.

1. Sidereal vs tropical zodiac

  • Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac: 0° Aries is the spring equinox, so the signs are tied to the seasons.
  • Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac: the signs are tied to the fixed stars.

The Earth's axis slowly wobbles (precession), so the equinox drifts backwards against the stars by about 1° every 72 years. The gap between the two zodiacs, the ayanamsa, is now about 24°. Our tools use the Lahiri ayanamsa, the Indian government standard.

2. Moon sign vs Sun sign

Western astrology leads with the Sun sign. Vedic astrology leads with the Moon sign (Rashi) and the ascendant (Lagna), because the Moon governs the mind and the timing of events.

3. Nakshatras

Vedic astrology adds 27 nakshatras, lunar mansions of 13°20′ each, on top of the 12 signs. They give much finer detail. See the full nakshatra list.

4. Dashas for timing

Western astrologers time events mainly with transits and progressions. Vedic astrologers use dashas, planetary periods calculated from the birth nakshatra. Read Vimshottari dasha explained.

5. Houses

Traditional Vedic astrology usually uses whole-sign houses: the rising sign is the whole 1st house. Western astrology most often uses Placidus, where houses are unequal.

6. The planets used

Vedic astrology uses the seven visible planets plus Rahu and Ketu, the lunar nodes. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are rarely used. Western astrology includes all three.

7. Charts look different

Vedic charts are drawn as squares: the North Indian diamond, where houses are fixed and signs move, or the South Indian grid, where signs are fixed. Western charts are circular wheels.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Why is my sign different in Vedic astrology?

Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which is aligned with the stars. Because of the precession of the equinoxes it currently sits about 24° behind the tropical zodiac used in the West, so many planets fall one sign earlier.

Which is more accurate, Vedic or Western astrology?

Neither is more 'correct'. They measure the zodiac from different reference points and use different techniques. Many people find Vedic timing tools (dashas) and Western psychological interpretations complement each other.

What is ayanamsa?

The angular difference between the tropical and sidereal zodiacs. The Lahiri ayanamsa, the Indian standard, is about 24°13′ in 2026.
